Tour overview

4-Day Mount Meru Climb

Discover Tanzania’s second-highest mountain on this four-day climb, combining wildlife, lush forest, dramatic volcanic landscapes and an unforgettable summit. Rising to 4,566 m within Arusha National Park, about 70 km west of Kilimanjaro, Meru offers one of northern Tanzania’s most rewarding treks, with steep crater walls and a spectacular summit ridge. Its lower slopes are protected wildlife habitat, so you may meet giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys and many birds while walking with an armed ranger. From Momella Gate, grassland gives way to montane forest, and higher up come views of the crater, the ridges and Kilimanjaro on the horizon.

The itinerary follows the Momella Route. Day one climbs through grassland and forest to Miriakamba Hut (about 2,514 m); day two continues up steeper forest trails to Saddle Hut (about 3,570 m), between the main summit and Little Meru, with an optional walk to Little Meru (about 3,820 m) if conditions allow. Day three starts in the small hours along the crater rim to Socialist Peak, before you descend via Saddle Hut to a second night at Miriakamba. The last day is a gentle descent through forest and wildlife-rich grassland to Momella Gate.

The four-day climb is more balanced than the three-day: the extra night at Miriakamba after the summit means you don’t have to descend all the way to Momella Gate on summit day. The summit remains challenging and needs good fitness, equipment and preparation. Meru is also popular before Kilimanjaro, giving valuable experience at altitude and on mountain terrain — though it doesn’t remove altitude risks, so allow time to recover between climbs. Your guides, crew and park ranger accompany you throughout, following park rules and our safety procedures.

Wildlife and Mountain Forests

Your Mount Meru adventure begins with a morning transfer from Arusha to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park, on the mountain’s eastern slopes. Meet your Genet Expeditions guide and the armed park ranger who accompanies every group — the lower slopes are wildlife habitat — and complete registration, permits and equipment checks before a briefing on the route and safety.

Set off through open grassland and woodland where giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and many birds may be seen, before the trail enters lush montane forest. It climbs steadily — past waterfalls or viewpoints, depending on the trail variation — to Miriakamba Hut (about 2,514 m), four to six hours in all. Settle into the hut, enjoy a warm meal from your crew and a briefing on tomorrow’s climb to Saddle Hut.

Ascending Towards the Volcanic Highlands

After breakfast, climb towards Saddle Hut through montane forest and increasingly steep terrain, with sustained uphill sections. As the vegetation changes, a series of viewpoints reveal Mount Meru’s dramatic crater walls and volcanic formations. Your guide keeps a steady pace with regular drinks and watches how everyone is adjusting to the altitude.

Reach Saddle Hut (about 3,570 m), between the main summit and Little Meru, after three to five hours. If the weather, time and your health allow, your guide may suggest an optional walk to Little Meru (about 3,820 m, 1.5–2.5 hours return) for extra altitude exposure and fine views. After health checks and a briefing on the early start, rest well before the climb to Socialist Peak.

Summit Challenge and Volcanic Landscapes

Your summit attempt starts around midnight or soon after, depending on the weather and your team’s assessment. After a light snack, climb to Rhino Point and then along Mount Meru’s dramatic crater rim, over steep rocky sections, exposed ridges and loose volcanic ground that need careful footing — cold, darkness and altitude add to the challenge. As dawn breaks, the crater, its ash cone and, far to the east, Kilimanjaro come into view. If the weather, trail and your health allow, continue to Socialist Peak (4,566 m) for sweeping views across northern Tanzania.

From your highest safe point, descend carefully along the crater rim to Saddle Hut for a rest and a meal, then on through the upper slopes to Miriakamba Hut as the volcanic terrain gives way to lush forest — ten to fourteen hours or more in all. A warm dinner and a second night at Miriakamba mean you don’t have to go all the way to Momella Gate on summit day.

Final Descent Through Arusha National Park

After breakfast, descend through the montane forest towards Momella Gate with your guide and ranger, as open mountain views give way to tall trees and woodland — past waterfalls, grassland and viewpoints, depending on the descent route, with time for rests and photographs. It is a gentle end after the demanding summit day.

Reach Momella Gate after two to four hours, keeping watch for giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs and birds on the lower slopes (sightings are never guaranteed). After the park exit formalities, thank your crew and transfer back to your hotel in Arusha to celebrate the end of your four-day Mount Meru climb with Genet Expeditions.

Important travel information

Who this climb suits
Physically prepared hikers who want a challenging summit on a more balanced schedule. Previous hiking experience helps — the summit route includes steep, exposed terrain.
Altitude & safety
The night at Miriakamba after the summit makes the four-day climb less compressed than the three-day, but it doesn’t remove altitude risks or guarantee the summit. Although Meru is lower than Kilimanjaro, altitude illness can still occur — your guide checks everyone regularly, and worsening symptoms mean descent. The summit ridge has steep, exposed volcanic sections where weather and fatigue add to the difficulty.
Best time to climb
January to early March and June to October are usually drier; April–May and parts of November bring more rain, muddy trails and less visibility. Weather near the summit is unpredictable all year.
Where you sleep
Designated mountain huts with basic, shared facilities — Miriakamba Hut and Saddle Hut.
What to pack
Broken-in waterproof boots; base and insulating layers; a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers; a warm summit jacket; gloves, hat and neck warmer; sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen; a daypack and water bottles; a sleeping bag for cold hut nights; a headlamp with spare batteries; trekking poles; toiletries, medication and a small first-aid kit; snacks; waterproof bags.
Preparing for Kilimanjaro
Meru is excellent altitude and trail experience before Kilimanjaro. It doesn’t remove altitude risks, so allow time to recover between climbs.

Questions

4-Day Mount Meru Climb FAQs

Is the 4-day climb easier than the 3-day?

It is more manageable, because the summit and final descent are spread over two days. The summit route is still physically demanding.

Is Mount Meru suitable for beginners?

The four-day climb can suit physically prepared hikers with good guidance, though previous hiking experience helps — the summit route is steep and exposed in places.

How high is Mount Meru?

About 4,566 m — Tanzania’s second-highest mountain after Kilimanjaro.

Can I see wildlife on the trek?

Yes. The lower slopes lie in Arusha National Park, where giraffes, buffaloes, warthogs, monkeys and many birds may be seen. Sightings are never guaranteed.

Do climbers sleep in tents or huts?

In designated mountain huts — Miriakamba and Saddle Hut — with basic, generally shared facilities.

Is a park ranger required?

Yes. An armed park ranger accompanies every group under park regulations, because the lower route passes through wildlife habitat.

Can Mount Meru prepare me for Kilimanjaro?

It gives valuable experience at altitude and on mountain terrain. It doesn’t remove altitude risks, so allow time to recover before your next climb.
