Days to remember

Not every Tanzanian adventure needs a week. The countryside around Arusha and Moshi is full of experiences that fit perfectly into a single day — a game drive in a national park, a walk to a waterfall in the foothills of Kilimanjaro, a swim in a clear spring, or an afternoon learning about coffee, culture and daily life from the people who live here.

Our day trips are ideal on the day before a Kilimanjaro climb, as a gentle recovery day after the summit, between a safari and a flight, or when you are visiting the region for work and have a free day. They are also a wonderful introduction to Tanzania for travellers who are short on time.

Every day trip is private, with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in Arusha or Moshi, a driver-guide and, where needed, a local guide from the community you visit. We can combine two experiences in one day — the Materuni waterfall and Chemka hot springs, for example — and adjust timings around your flights or climb.

Cultural visits are arranged with the communities themselves, so your visit supports local families and is welcomed rather than intrusive. Below you will find one-day safaris, nature days around Kilimanjaro and cultural encounters.

Choosing your day trip

01

Before or after Kilimanjaro

The day before a climb is best spent gently. The Materuni waterfall and coffee tour is a short walk through Chagga farmland to a tall waterfall on the lower slopes of the mountain, followed by roasting and tasting coffee with a local family. After the climb, a swim in the warm, clear water of Chemka hot springs is exactly what tired legs need.

02

One-day safaris

Arusha National Park is the closest park to Arusha and offers something unusual: walking safaris with an armed ranger, canoeing on the Momella Lakes and black-and-white colobus monkeys in the forest. Tarangire, about two hours away, is famous for elephants and baobabs. The Ngorongoro Crater is a long but extraordinary day, with an early start from Arusha.

03

Culture & community

A Maasai village visit introduces you to traditional homesteads, cattle herding and the songs and dances of one of East Africa’s best-known peoples. At Lake Eyasi, you can join the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, and visit Datoga blacksmiths — usually as part of a longer journey, as the lake is far from Arusha. Arusha and Moshi city walks show you markets, cafés and everyday Tanzanian life.

04

Nature & wildlife close to town

Lake Chala is a beautiful crater lake on the border with Kenya, combined with Marangu village on the slopes of Kilimanjaro. A Kilimanjaro day hike lets you walk through the mountain’s rainforest without climbing to the summit, and the Serval Wildlife experience offers a relaxed encounter with animals close to Arusha.

In our guests’ words

When to go

When to go

Day trips run all year. The dry months from June to October and January to February bring the clearest views of Kilimanjaro and the easiest walking. During the long rains, from around March to May, paths to waterfalls can be muddy and some park roads slippery, but the countryside is at its greenest and the waterfalls at their most powerful.

Kilimanjaro is most often visible early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so we plan timings to give you the best chance of seeing the summit.

Questions

Day trip FAQs

Still have a question? Our team in Moshi answers within 24 hours.

Ask on WhatsApp
Can I do a day trip the day before my Kilimanjaro climb?

Yes, as long as it is gentle. The Materuni waterfall and coffee tour or a Moshi town walk are ideal. We avoid long drives the day before a climb.

Is a Ngorongoro Crater day trip worth it?

Yes, if you are short on time — but it is a long day from Arusha. If you can, spend a night near the crater for a more relaxed visit.

Are day trips private?

Yes. Every day trip includes a private vehicle and guide, with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel in Arusha or Moshi.

Can I combine two day trips in one day?

Some combine well — for example Materuni and Chemka hot springs from Moshi. Tell us what interests you and we will suggest a plan.

Are cultural visits respectful to the communities?

We arrange visits with the communities themselves, so they are welcomed and support local families. Always ask before taking photographs of people.

What should I bring?

Comfortable walking shoes, sun protection, a light rain jacket, swimwear for the hot springs and some small notes for purchases or tips.
