Responsible Tourism in Tanzania

Travel that benefits the people, wildlife and places that make Tanzania so special — and practical ways you can help.

Responsible tourism

Travel that gives back

Tanzania’s wildlife, landscapes and cultures are extraordinary, and tourism plays a vital role in protecting them. Park and conservation fees help fund the protection of places such as the Serengeti and Kilimanjaro, and tourism provides livelihoods for guides, porters, cooks, lodge staff, farmers and artisans across the country.

As a Tanzanian, family-run company based in Moshi, we believe travel should benefit the people and places you visit. That means employing local guides and crew, treating them fairly, respecting wildlife and communities, and helping our guests travel thoughtfully.

On this page we explain our approach and share simple ways you can make a positive difference during your trip. Responsible travel is not about doing without — it is about travelling with care, curiosity and respect.

Our approach

What we commit to

  1. 01

    Local people, local expertise

Our guides, drivers and mountain crew are Tanzanian, and we work with locally owned businesses wherever we can.

  2. 02

    Fair treatment of porters

Porters are the backbone of every Kilimanjaro climb. We aim for fair pay, proper equipment, reasonable loads and good food and shelter on the mountain.

  3. 03

    Respect for wildlife

Our guides keep a respectful distance, stay on permitted tracks and never disturb animals for a better photo.

  4. 04

    Respectful cultural visits

Cultural visits are arranged with communities, so they are welcomed and benefit local families directly.

  5. 05

    Less waste

We encourage refillable water bottles and pack out what we bring in, on safari and on the mountain.

  6. 06

    Honest advice

We recommend routes, seasons and lodges that suit you — and tell you when less is more.

How you can help

Simple ways to make a difference

01

On Kilimanjaro

Choose a company that treats its crew fairly, tip your guides and porters, and carry your own day pack. The Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project, a Tanzanian non-profit, offers advice on what fair treatment looks like and how climbers can help. Leave nothing on the mountain — everything carried up must come down.

02

On safari

Follow your guide’s advice, keep your voice low near animals, and never ask your driver to leave the track or get closer than is safe. Do not feed wildlife, and take your rubbish with you. Remember that park fees directly support conservation.

03

With local communities

Always ask before photographing people, dress modestly in villages and towns, and learn a few words of Swahili. Buy crafts directly from artisans and cooperatives, and avoid souvenirs made from wildlife, shells or coral.

04

Plastic & waste

Tanzania has banned plastic carrier bags, so please pack without them — they may be confiscated on arrival. Bring a refillable water bottle; safe drinking water is provided on our safaris and climbs.

05

Drones

Drones are not permitted in Tanzania’s national parks without special permission, and flying them elsewhere requires authorisation. Please leave your drone at home unless we have arranged a permit in advance.

Questions

Responsible travel FAQs

Still have a question? Our team in Moshi answers within 24 hours.

Ask on WhatsApp
How much should I tip on safari and Kilimanjaro?

Tipping is customary and an important part of crew income. We send clear guidance on recommended amounts before you travel.

Can I bring plastic bags to Tanzania?

No — plastic carrier bags are banned. Use reusable bags, and note that bags may be confiscated on arrival.

Is it okay to take photos of people?

Always ask first. Many people are happy to be photographed, but some are not, and asking is a sign of respect.

Can I bring a drone?

Drones are not allowed in national parks without special permission. Please talk to us before bringing one.
