Tour overview

7-Day Lemosho Route Kilimanjaro Climb

Experience the beauty of Africa’s highest mountain on this seven-day climb that starts on Kilimanjaro’s quieter western slopes before joining the scenic southern circuit to Uhuru Peak. Lemosho is celebrated for its wilderness, varied landscapes and fine views of the mountain’s volcanic formations. From Londorossi Gate, the trail climbs through lush rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp, then into heathland, moorland and the magnificent Shira Plateau — with a professional guide and crew, freshly prepared meals and camp set up for you each night.

The itinerary combines the beautiful western approach with the iconic southern circuit. After a night in the forest, you climb to Shira I and cross the plateau to Shira II, with superb views of Kibo. From there you climb to Lava Tower at about 4,600 m and descend to sleep at Barranco — gaining height by day and sleeping lower. Next comes the famous Barranco Wall, then the Karanga Valley and Barafu Camp, the base for the night climb to Stella Point and, conditions permitting, Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m.

This climb suits physically prepared travellers comfortable with challenging trails, long days and basic camping. No technical skills are needed in normal conditions, but there are steep ascents, exposed scrambling and a demanding summit night. It is more compressed than the eight-day Lemosho, as it combines the Barranco-to-Barafu section into one long day; for many travellers the eight-day version, with a night at Karanga, is more gradual. Your Genet Expeditions team provides guidance, meals, camp and regular health checks throughout.

Into the Western Rainforest

Your climb begins with a transfer from Moshi or Arusha to Londorossi Gate on Kilimanjaro’s western side, through villages, farmland and forested slopes. Your guide completes park registration, permit checks and final equipment checks; depending on park arrangements and road conditions, the group may then drive on to the Lemosho trailhead before setting off into the rainforest.

The trail climbs gently through tall trees and moss-hung branches, home to forest birds and, sometimes, monkeys — a comfortable introduction to the mountain. After three to four hours, reach Mti Mkubwa (“Big Tree”) Camp at about 2,650 m, where your crew has pitched the tents. Enjoy a warm dinner and a briefing on tomorrow’s walk to Shira I Camp.

After breakfast the trail leaves the rainforest for heathland and open moorland, with wide views over Kilimanjaro’s western slopes and the plains below. The path climbs steadily over rocky ridges towards the Shira Plateau, and on clear days Kibo Peak grows ever more impressive. Your guide keeps a comfortable pace with regular rests.

After five to seven hours the land opens onto the Shira Plateau. Reach Shira I Camp (about 3,500 m), settle into your tent and enjoy a warm meal. Your guide carries out routine health checks and briefs you on tomorrow’s walk across the plateau to Shira II Camp.

Exploring the Shira Plateau

Today crosses the Shira Plateau, an ancient volcanic landscape of open moorland, low alpine plants and volcanic rock, with superb views of Kibo and the mountain’s western and southern slopes. The gradient is gentler than on previous days, leaving time to enjoy the scenery while your guide watches how everyone is adjusting to the altitude.

After three to four hours, reach Shira II Camp (about 3,850 m). The shorter day gives you time to rest before tomorrow’s acclimatization stage to Lava Tower. After a warm meal and health checks, spend the afternoon relaxing, drinking well and enjoying the high-altitude calm of the plateau.

Acclimatization Trek via Lava Tower

After breakfast at Shira II Camp, set off towards Lava Tower. This is one of the route’s most important acclimatization days. The trail climbs through ever sparser vegetation to Lava Tower, a striking volcanic plug at about 4,600 m, across open ground of rock and gravel with dramatic views of the upper mountain. Gaining height during the day and sleeping lower is a proven way to help your body adjust. Weather permitting, enjoy lunch near the tower.

Then descend into the Barranco Valley, where barren desert gives way to giant groundsels and other remarkable plants beneath the towering Barranco Wall. After six to eight hours, reach Barranco Camp (about 3,960 m) for a warm meal, health checks and a briefing on tomorrow’s long day over the Barranco Wall to Barafu Camp.

The Barranco Wall and Karanga Valley

After an early breakfast, tackle the famous Barranco Wall, a steep rocky face rising above camp. No technical equipment is normally needed, but some sections are steep and exposed and call for careful scrambling, balance and concentration; your guide leads the way and sets the rhythm. From the top, enjoy sweeping views of the valleys, the camp below and Kilimanjaro’s southern glaciers.

The trail crosses ridges and the Karanga Valley before climbing through barren alpine desert to Barafu Camp (about 4,670 m), the base for the summit attempt. Because this itinerary combines two stages into one, it is a long, demanding day of seven to nine hours or more — the longer version adds a night at Karanga Camp. Arrive for an early meal, health checks and a full briefing on the night’s summit attempt, then rest and prepare your kit.

Summit Attempt and Descent to Mweka

Your summit attempt usually starts around midnight after a short rest at Barafu Camp. After a light snack, climb steeply by headlamp through loose volcanic scree — cold, dark and at extreme altitude, this is the hardest stage of the climb. Your guide sets a slow, controlled pace and checks each climber regularly. The first goal is Stella Point on the crater rim (about 5,756 m). If the weather, the trail and your health allow, continue along the rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa, with views over the crater and the remaining ice fields. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed, and your guide’s safety decisions always come first.

From your highest safe point, descend carefully to Barafu Camp for a rest and a meal, then continue down through the alpine desert to Mweka Camp (about 3,100 m) as the air thickens and the vegetation returns. With the ascent and descent combined, this is an exceptionally long day of twelve to sixteen hours or more. Arrive for a warm dinner and a well-earned night’s rest after one of the most memorable days of your life.

Final Descent Through the Rainforest

After breakfast, descend through the upper forest towards Mweka Gate as open mountain slopes give way to dense rainforest, tall trees and moss-covered branches. The descent is easier on the lungs, but the steady downhill walking can be tiring after summit day, so your guide keeps a comfortable pace with time for rests and photographs.

Reach Mweka Gate after three to four hours, where your guide completes the park exit formalities and eligible climbers receive their summit certificate for the highest official point reached. Thank your mountain crew and transfer back to your hotel in Moshi or Arusha to celebrate the end of your seven-day Lemosho Route climb with Genet Expeditions.

Important travel information

Who this climb suits
Physically prepared trekkers comfortable with long days, steep sections, scrambling on the Barranco Wall and basic camping. The combined Barranco-to-Barafu day makes this version particularly demanding.
Altitude & safety
The climb to Lava Tower and descent to Barranco supports acclimatization, but the schedule is demanding. The eight-day Lemosho, with a night at Karanga, is more gradual. Your guide checks everyone regularly for headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual tiredness and breathlessness; worsening symptoms mean descent, not a summit. Speak to a doctor before booking if you have medical concerns, and carry insurance that covers high-altitude trekking and evacuation.
Best time to climb
January to early March and June to October are usually drier. April–May and parts of November bring more rain, muddy trails and less visibility. Mountain weather is unpredictable all year — prepare for rain, wind and freezing summit temperatures.
Where you sleep
This route uses designated mountain campsites, with tents and meals set up by your crew. Every comfort level uses the same campsites; higher levels add upgraded equipment and service where practical.
What to pack
Broken-in waterproof boots; base and insulating layers; a waterproof, windproof jacket and trousers; a warm summit jacket; gloves, hat and neck warmer; sun hat, sunglasses and high-SPF sunscreen; a daypack and water bottles; a cold-rated sleeping bag; a headlamp with spare batteries; trekking poles; toiletries, medication and a small first-aid kit; snacks; waterproof bags.
Add a safari
We can arrange safaris to Tarangire, the Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and more before or after your climb — just allow a day or two to recover.

Challenging: steep ascents, uneven terrain, the Barranco Wall and a demanding summit night, with a long combined Barranco-to-Barafu day.

Is Lemosho suitable for beginners?

Physically prepared first-time high-altitude trekkers may consider it, but the eight-day version is generally better for a more gradual climb.

Does Lemosho use huts?

No. Lemosho is a camping route — your crew sets up tents at designated campsites.

What is the difference between the 7- and 8-day Lemosho?

The eight-day climb adds a night at Karanga Camp, splitting the long Barranco-to-Barafu day in two.

What is the highest point reached?

The goal is Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. The highest point you actually reach depends on the weather, the trail and your health.

Can I combine the climb with a safari?
